BACKGROUND

Overview

This case study explores the Resilient Memory Journal, an innovative journaling app designed to enhance cognitive functions for those who experience memory loss through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with personalized journaling.

Problem Statement

Journaling individuals often struggle to find a platform that truly caters to their needs for cognitive and emotional development. Existing digital journaling tools lack the integration of advanced AI to deeply analyze and enhance the memory retention and emotional intelligence of users.

Resilient Memory Journal aims to solve these issues by offering a technologically advanced solution that integrates voice-to-text and photo capabilities, uses natural language processing (NLP) for analyzing and summarizing journal entries, and employs neural networks to track and predict mood patterns.

PROTOTYPE

Home / Write Page

You can either scroll all the way down or tap on the navigation bar to start your entry. When you enter your entry you will have three ways: text, voice, or image. Once you saved your entry, you can tap on "AI Analysis" to view your report.

Analytics

There are three sub-sections in the Analytics page: "Summary". "Mood", and "Personality". In this page, you can see your report from all of your journal entry.

Profile

This is where you can change you privacy settings and some resources for mental health. You can also choose to sync your journal entry on all other devices.

RESEARCH

Research Methods

Research Articles

Cognitive Psychology Theories

  • By drawing on the short-term and long-term memory framework on Tulving's episodic memory research the app enhances journaling skills and maximizes memory retention and retrieval.

  • Jonides et al.'s short-Term memory research influences the app’s capabilities, focusing on enhancing short-term memory processes.

AI and Emotional Intelligence

  • Safari and Chalechale's NLP research inspired the  journal's sentiment tracking component, combining emotional intelligence with AI for an in-depth analysis of sentiment patterns.

Positive Thinking Exercises

  • The app includes positive thinking exercises based on Crawford et al.'s research, aiming to improve cognitive functioning and memory recall.

Competitor Analysis

The Resilient Memory Journal differentiates itself from existing journaling apps like Day One, Journey, Penzu, and Notion through its advanced AI capabilities. While other apps provide basic journaling functions, the Resilient Memory Journal excels in offering comprehensive mood and cognitive analysis, AI generate prompt and insights, and tips for positive thinking, positioning it as a unique tool in the market.

FEEDBACK

Expert Feedback:

  • Overall Opinion: Experts found the journal promising for future markets, especially given the growing emphasis on mental health and the impact of social media on memory.
  • AI Dependency: Unanimously, experts agreed that AI is essential for the journal. Without AI, the journal would not effectively combat memory loss or be distinct from traditional methods. The AI features, including NLP and neural networks, are critical for its memory practice functionalities.
  • Market Readiness Concerns: Experts raised concerns about user privacy, feature refinement, and user experience. They stressed the importance of robust security measures, like duo factor authentication and enhanced cybersecurity, to protect user data. Also, maintaining a user-friendly interface and accurate AI features was emphasized for a good user experience.

Peer Feedback:

  • General Perception: Peers saw the product as beneficial, aligning with societal trends towards mental health awareness.
  • Concerns: There were worried about the product making assumptions about users, potentially leading to inaccuracies, and its features being too generic, possibly replaceable by existing Google applications.
  • AI's Role in Personalization: The team addressed these concerns by focusing on the AI’s ability to learn from users and create personalized practices and prompts, ensuring the product's unique value proposition.
